Orchideen Leptotes bicolor
With an almost inexhaustible imagination when choosing her garment, the orchid blossom delights our eyes; However, it remains hidden from him, what this royal family of plants has in store for us in terms of beauty, also in the area of the microcosm. Similar to the flowers, the seeds also try, tens of thousands of which go to a gram, each other with all sorts of adventurous, to surpass bizarre or pleasing shapes and diverse color nuances. On the figure in the appendix we find out of the multitude of orchid seeds – by the Vienna City Councilor J. G. Beer traced the microscopic picture with loving effort – also our Leptotes bicolor, which occurs in Brazil and Paraguay.
The tiny one, undifferenzierte Embryo, that we find in the middle of each seed, received no nutrient tissue from the orchids as a dowry. There is a reason for this seemingly neglected treatment; because the top priority is: Ease of seeds! So they also have an airy feel, light coat added as travel gear, which was prepared with special care from the tissue of the seed coat. With its help, the dust-fine seeds are carried floating over long distances, even with weak air movement, or are lifted up to lofty heights, seemingly weightless, which is of particular importance for the epiphytes. But only a few of the thousands of seeds produced germinate, which only then becomes possible, when such a seed meets hyphae of certain types of fungus. In a sense, these act as obstetricians and wet nurses at the same time, by supplying germination-stimulating substances and supplying the young seedling with water and organic nutrients.
